Under the supervision of the Chief Safety Officer, there are six operational units responsible for various aspects of public safety:
University Police provide services 24/7/365, is commissioned by the state of Utah, and includes officers who are POST-certified. Within U Police, there are three units (Administration, Patrol and Investigations) that work to serve and protect members of the U community, including students, employees, visitors, and patients, as well as their property.
Community Services is a new division created in 2020. While this division is currently being built, it will work in tandem with police and campus partners to support victims of all crimes and employs social workers and other professionals who can provide crisis support.
Unarmed security officers serve the community 24/7/365. Unarmed trained officers conduct routine foot patrols in buildings and around campus daily. The team also provides courtesy escorts and motorist assistance to students, faculty, staff and visitors at the University of Utah.
Emergency Management aims to increase the university’s capabilities to respond to the hazards that threaten the campus while preventing or reducing the impact on the community. Emergency Management coordinates the activities of various departments responsible for continued operations during disasters, coordinate inter-local agreements for use of resources, communicate with state and federal agencies, and provide education and training.
U HEALTH SECURITY
The U Health Security is a non-sworn division responsible for the security of the University of Utah Hospital and Clinics. Security officers work 24/7/365 patrolling all areas of the University Hospital, clinics, research facilities, buildings, and parking structures.
Emergency Communications operate 24/7/365. Staff answer emergency (9-1-1) and non-emergency (801-585-2677) calls, operate public safety radio frequencies, perform record checks, monitor campus alarms, coordinate with neighboring public safety agencies, and dispatch for police, fire, security, and medical resources for the University of Utah.
